Man Wielding Machete Carries Out Attack in Two Spanish Churches, Killing One and Injuring Another

Attack in southern spain involved a man wielding a machete who attacked two churches. at the first church, the san isidro in algeciras, the priest was attacked and seriously injured. the assailant then moved on to the second church, nuestra senora de la palma, where he stabbed the verger to death. the suspect was disarmed and arrested shortly after the incident. prime minister pedro sanchez expressed his condolences to the families of the verger.

Incident occurred on sunday evening at 19:00 local time (18:00 gmt). the attack took place in the two churches in algeciras, a busy ferry port connecting the iberian peninsula with morocco and spain’s north african enclave of ceuta. the local muslim community in algeciras denounced the attack as a “brutal and vicious attack”.

Suspect entered the church of san isidro armed with a machete and attacked the priest, leaving him seriously wounded. he then entered the church of nuestra senora de la palma, causing damage and attacking the verger. the verger managed to get outside the church but was attacked again and fatally wounded. the suspect was disarmed and arrested and is currently in police custody. investigators are treating the incident as terror-related.
