6 january, abigail zwerner, 25, was shot in the chest in her classroom at richneck elementary school. the shooting was described as intentional by authorities and ms zwerner had raised concerns about the six-year-old boy prior to the incident. despite warnings that the boy had a gun, school officials failed to take action. ms zwerner was released from hospital last week.
Shooting occurred at richneck elementary school on 6 january. a teacher reported that she believed the young boy had put the gun in his pocket before he went out for recess and an administrator ignored a teacher’s request to search the boy and his backpack. ms zwerner had asked for help prior to the incident.
Gun used by the boy had been legally purchased by his mother and the family said the weapon had been “secured”. despite this, virginia law prohibits anyone from recklessly leaving a loaded, unsecured firearm in such a way that may endanger a child under 14 years of age. ms zwerner saved lives on the day of the shooting by ushering her students out of the class after being shot through the hand and in the chest. police have not announced any charges and the school board did not immediately return the bbc’s request for comment. attorney diane toscano intends to file a lawsuit.
