WHO Declares COVID-19 a Global Pandemic: Urgent Action Needed to Contain Spread of Virus

World health organization (who) declared the novel coronavirus (covid-19) a pandemic on march 11, 2020. the virus has spread to more than 100 countries and territories, resulting in over 3,000 deaths worldwide. the who has issued guidance on how to prevent the spread of the virus, including washing hands often and avoiding close contact with those who are sick.

Virus is believed to have originated in wuhan, china, and is believed to have first been transmitted from animals to humans. governments around the world have implemented travel restrictions and quarantines, closed schools and universities, and many businesses have shut down. the who has warned that the virus could cause a global economic recession.

Virus is spread through contact with an infected person or through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing. symptoms of the virus include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. the who has urged countries to take urgent and aggressive action to contain the virus and scientists are working to develop a vaccine for the virus. health authorities are also recommending social distancing, such as avoiding large gatherings and working from home.
