Tragedy Strikes Peru as Protests Against President Boluarte Claim More Lives

Least three more people have died amid protests against peru’s president dina boluarte. the protests were sparked by the ousting of former leader pedro castillo and the demonstrators are demanding that ms boluarte step aside and call for fresh elections, as well as for mr castillo to be released from custody. a woman died in the southern town of macusani, where a police station is reported to have been set on fire, and peru’s human rights watchdog reported two further deaths as a result of blockades in the northern la libertad region.

Protests began weeks ago and have since seen thousands of protesters from rural areas converging in the capital lima. the 35-year-old woman was admitted to hospital without any vital signs, according to emergency services, and a 51-year-old woman and a teenager lost their baby. pedro castillo is being investigated on charges of rebellion and conspiracy.

Used tear gas to disperse crowds in lima as the protests continued. ms boluarte has resisted calls to step down and issued a call earlier this week to peruvians to ensure their protests were peaceful. the demonstrations are a result of the political turmoil that erupted last month when mr castillo was arrested for trying to dissolve congress. he denies all the accusations, insisting that he is still the country’s legitimate president.
