Friday, us officials launched an investigation after two planes full of passengers almost collided at john f kennedy international airport in new york. a delta air lines boeing 737 was preparing to take off while an american airlines boeing 777 was crossing the same runway. the delta aircraft was carrying 145 passengers and six crew members, while the american airlines plane was carrying 137 passengers and 14 crew members. the collision was averted when an air controller noticed the two and the delta plane came to a stop on the runway, while the american airlines plane safely crossed in front of it at around 20:45 est (01:45 gmt).
Incident happened at john f kennedy international airport in new york on friday. the delta air lines boeing 737 was about to take off while the american airlines boeing 777 was crossing the same runway. the two planes were around 1,000ft (300m) away from each other when the delta aircraft stopped.
Collision was averted when an air traffic controller noticed the two planes and attempted to stop the delta aeroplane as it was preparing to take wing. using an expletive, the controller was captured saying, “delta 1943, cancel take-off clearance! delta 1943, cancel take-off clearance!” the controller’s quick action prevented the incident from becoming a disaster similar to the 1977 tenerife collision between a pan am and klm planes, which killed 583 people and injured 61.
