Vice-president francia mã¡rquez and her security team were involved in an attempt to kill her. the officers found a plastic bag containing a high-powered explosive substance made of ammonium nitrate, powdered aluminium and nails near her family home in south-west colombia. the device was destroyed in a controlled explosion and weighed more than 7kg (15lb).

Attempt to kill ms mã¡rquez happened in the village of yolombã³ in suarez, cauca. members of her security team found the device planted on the road to her family home.

Mã¡rquez rose to prominence for her opposition to gold mining in her home province and was running mate to mr petro, the former mayor of bogotã¡ and ex-rebel fighter. mr petro has negotiated with rebel groups and drug cartels to try to end decades of armed violence. it is unclear why someone would have wanted to kill ms mã¡rquez, but her prominence and her work to end violence may have made her a target.
