International Outrage After Two Protesters Hanged in Iran Following Unfair Trials

Protesters were hanged on saturday, prompting international condemnation and sparking protests outside rajai shahr jail in karaj, iran. 19,290 protesters have been arrested, with 111 of them facing the threat of a death sentence after being convicted or charged with capital offences. the executions were in connection with the protests that erupted in september following the death in custody of a woman detained by morality police.

Executions took place on saturday, while the protests outside rajai shahr jail occurred overnight on sunday and monday. the un human rights office deplored the executions, which it said followed “unfair trials based on forced confessions”.

Protests erupted in september following the death in custody of a woman detained by morality police. authorities have labelled the unrest as “riots” and responded with lethal force, resulting in the deaths of at least 519 protesters and 68 security personnel. on sunday night, people gathered outside rajai shahr prison to protest the imminent execution of two protestors, mohammad ghobadlou and mohammad boroughani. ghobadlou and boroughani were convicted of “enmity against god” after being accused of driving into a group of policemen during a protest in tehran in september, killing one of them and injuring others. both of them denied the charge and said they were tortured.
