Kyiv on High Alert as Russian Attacks Continue into New Year

Sunday night, air raid sirens sounded in kyiv as russia continued its latest wave of drone and missile strikes. the attacks have been ongoing for several days over the new year period, resulting in the injury of one man in kyiv due to debris from a destroyed russian drone. ukrainian armed forces reported that 400 russian soldiers were killed in makiivka, a russian-occupied donetsk region, on new year’s eve. pro-russian authorities admitted to casualties, a rare move.

Air alert went off in the capital just after 01:00 (23:00 gmt) on monday, with kyiv’s mayor vitali klitschko reporting an explosion in the city’s desnyanskyi district. emergency services attended to the scene and a 19-year-old man was hospitalised with injuries. ukraine’s foreign minister dmytro kuleba identified the weapons used as iranian-made shahed drones, which were targeting critical infrastructure facilities. the previous barrage of attacks on new year’s eve had killed at least one person in kyiv.
