Shock Announcement: Afrochella No Longer Returns After Five Years of Celebrations

Of afrochella announced at el-wak stadium in accra that the festival would not be returning after five years. co-founder abdul abdullah made the shock announcement to thousands of people in attendance, who had just seen headliner burna boy close his set. nigerian artiste ayra starr, stonebwoy, asake, gyakie, and jules from the netherlands were among the other talented musicians who had performed that night. the news went largely unnoticed due to the late hour of 03:00, and caused shock and dismay among those in the crowd.

Announcement was made on new year’s eve, at el-wak stadium in accra. many had travelled from the us or uk to celebrate the new year in the continent of their origin, and were disappointed to hear the news. afrochella was one of the events that authorities in ghana had hoped would continue to attract tourists, particularly from the african diaspora, in the wake of the “year of return” initiative in 2019.

End of afrochella was due to a lawsuit from california-based music festival cochella for trademark infringement, which was filed in october. the news caused ayra starr to fall on stage while performing her hit song, which she blamed on the organisers. despite the end of afrochella, tourists and visitors can still enjoy a wide range of programmes, such as the afro nation festival, bhim concert, tropical fiesta, mozama disco, and lamajo fest. additional reporting by thomas naadi.
