Least 10 people were killed and five others were wounded when a minibus hit a landmine in burkina faso, a west african country, on monday. the blast occurred in the east of the country near the border with niger and some of the passengers are still missing, meaning the death toll could rise. the region has been facing jihadist insurgencies since 2013, resulting in thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people.
Incident took place in burkina faso’s east near the border with niger. last january, the military seized power in the country and promised an end to the attacks, but the violence has continued to rage. french troops have been attempting to assist the region’s armies in tackling the militants since 2013.
Minibus hit a landmine which caused the explosion. french troops withdrew from mali in august after a diplomatic fall-out with the country’s military rulers, however, french troops are still present in other sahel countries. the coups that were meant to bring safety have not been successful. the cause of the landmine explosion is still unclear.
