1: ex-spanish king juan carlos and businesswoman corinna zu sayn-wittgenstein were involved in a case brought against the former monarch in the uk. juan carlos won an appeal to block part of the case, which was related to allegations of a campaign of harassment against ms zu sayn-wittgenstein since their relationship broke down in 2012. the uk judges ruled that juan carlos had immunity over the allegations related to the time he served as monarch.
2: the case began in 2014 when juan carlos abdicated and ms zu sayn-wittgenstein began seeking damages and an injunction over the alleged harassment. in february 2021, a previous ruling stated that juan carlos’s behaviour before 2014 had been “private conduct” and could be prosecuted. however, on tuesday’s court of appeal judgment overruled this and granted immunity to the former king.
3: juan carlos was credited with overseeing spain’s transition from dictatorship to democracy in 1975, but left the country in 2018 amid allegations of fraud and a swiss investigation into a multi-million dollar payment from saudi arabia. ms zu sayn-wittgenstein’s lawyer, michael kim, stated that the judgement only applied to the period when juan carlos was the reigning king of spain and the majority of the claim, from 2014, remains unaffected.
