Least five people have been killed and eight injured in two explosions at two separate russian military airfields. the first explosion occurred at an airfield in the city of ryazan, south-east of moscow, when a fuel tanker exploded, killing three people and injuring six. another two people were reported to have been injured in an explosion at an airfield in the saratov region. both sites are hundreds of kilometres away from the ukrainian border.
Explosions occurred on tuesday, and the saratov regional governor has since confirmed that security forces are checking reports of an incident at military installations. the engels airbase in the saratov region is believed to be the home of russia’s long-range strategic bombers. bbc’s russian editor steven rosenberg has commented that these reports will fuel speculation that ukraine may be behind the explosions.
Present, it is not clear what caused the blasts. reports of the explosions at two different military sites have sparked speculation that ukraine may be behind them. security forces are currently investigating the incident, but it is not yet known how or why the explosions occurred.
