New Meteorite Findings Could Change Our Understanding of the Universe

A team of Canadian researchers has discovered two new minerals in a meteorite that fell to Earth. The meteorite, called Nightfall, was found in Somalia two years ago.

The new minerals, elaliite and elkinstantonite, were identified by scientists at the University of Alberta who studied a 70g fragment of the 15-tonne meteorite.

The meteorite is said to be the ninth-biggest to reach our planet and is 90% iron and nickel. The discovery of the new minerals could have potential uses in a wide range of fields.
